Health Insurance

The University subsidizes the premium for medical coverage according to the percentage of the employment. A student with a 50% appointment will receive a 95% subsidy; the student pays the remaining 5%. Eligible graduate assistants must apply for the insurance by the enrollment deadline during the first term of their appointment but do not need to re-enroll each term. Dependent coverage is also available.

Students with 50% appointments (graduate assistantships or qualifying fellowships) are covered by the Graduate Assistant Health Plan. Open enrollment must be completed by September 28th, 2023. Students should enroll as soon as possible to prevent any gap in coverage. Additionally, students will see a fee for health insurance coverage on their student account, which will only be removed when they submit the enrollment form. See: https://shb.umn.edu/graduate-assistants/gahp-open-enrollment

International Students who hold an eligible assistantship or fellowship should waive the SHBP during the beginning of the fall /spring semester, whichever one is the start of your first assistantship/fellowship. Since the Health Coverage Declaration (HCD) is assigned to your MyU account, you may complete it to avoid further notifications about it. To complete the HCD, log in to your MyU account, click on "Key Links" and then "Student Center". The HCD will automatically appear, you may select the "Waive Me" option.

Summer Coverage: Students with 50% graduate assistant appointments in both fall and spring semesters automatically remain enrolled for the summer unless they fill out a Cancellation of Coverage form. The University contribution for summer is based on the semesters during the academic year in which a qualifying graduate assistantship was held.

Students with fellowships (either for the year or for one term) are covered for the academic year but are not automatically enrolled for summer. In this case, students who wish to be covered for the summer must send an e-mail to the Department Chair requesting this.

Continuation of Coverage: After losing eligibility for the health plan, students have the right to continue coverage for up to 18 months at their own expense. To request continuation, complete the Continuation of Coverage Enrollment Form and submit to the Office of Student Health Benefits within 60 days of loss of coverage.
