Summer

Summer Funding

The Department tries to support as many graduate students over the summer as it can; its funding decisions are based on equality, seniority, merit, academic progress, and availability of funds. Graduate students receiving a summer fellowship from the department can accept another academic award from UMN (pending any restrictions on the external award).

  • All external awards below $2,000 will receive the full summer funding amount from the department.
  • Students who have been awarded external summer funds (such as fellowships, grants, or scholarships) and have not received departmental summer funding will be eligible for additional departmental funds of $3,000 if the total of their external funds does not exceed $7,000.

Employment at UMN external to the department, or outside of the university, does not affect departmental summer awards. Summer teaching in the department may not be combined with a departmental summer fellowship (unless it is co-taught, at which point it will be treated on a case-by-case basis). Other summer employment in the department (curriculum development, RAships, etc.) will be treated on a case-by-case basis.

Summer Teaching Opportunities

The department offers courses during the summer. When feasible, graduate students in good standing are offered to teach some of these summer sections. Please consult the DLI and the DGS for more information about the upcoming summer teaching assignments. Interested students can apply for these positions when they submit their SAR. Summer courses do count as a form of summer funding.
